DIRECTOR

Mike Kamin is the founder and director of the showcase.  Kamin’s background in athletics is long and varied.  A native of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, Kamin was a 2018 inductee into the East Greenwich Athletic Hall of Fame.  In basketball, he was a 3-year varsity letterwinner and 2-time captain for East Greenwich High School.  As a senior, he was a Street &

Smith Honorable Mention All-American, All-Class B and All-State selection. He led East Greenwich to a 24-4 record, the Rhode Island Class B State Championship, and was named Class B Tournament MVP. In track and field, he earned four varsity letters, three All-State selections between throwing the javelin and shotput, and was the RI state champion in the shotput in 1990. In college, Kamin earned two varsity letters for the University of Illinois Track and Field program as a javelin thrower. He was a 3-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and placed 5th and 6th at the Outdoor Big Ten Championships as a junior and senior. In 1994, he was a member of the Fighting Illini’s Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field championship team. He still ranks in the top-10 on the U of I’s all-time javelin list. Following college, Kamin spent over a decade as a sports radio broadcaster for college basketball and football. He called games for Central Michigan University, UIC, Detroit Mercy, and worked as the broadcast host on the Michigan State Radio Network. He broadcasted games from 2003 NCAA tournament in Salt Lake City with Central Michigan and in St. Louis at the 2005 Final Four with the Spartans. After starting a family and moving to the Chicago area, Kamin coached youth basketball for five years with the LZ Hoops feeder program in Lake Zurich. He is now a certified IHSA basketball official working both boys and girls high school games in the northern and northwest suburbs. He and his wife Rachel live in Lake Zurich and have two boys. As an athlete, Kamin competed for Boston in basketball during the 1988 JCC Maccabi Games in Chicago. As a parent, his oldest son competed for Chicago’s basketball teams at the 2022 JCC Maccabi Games in San Diego and in 2023 in Israel. His younger son played basketball for Chicago at the 2024 JCC Maccabi Games in Detroit. The family are active members of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, where Rachel is the Director of Lifelong Learning.
